Sightseeing in and around San Francisco!

We’ve had a fabulous week – exploring San Francisco, new anchorages, touristy fun and home school has begun!

Auntie Gill arrived with the kids the second day after we arrived in San Francisco. The kids enjoyed a super fun week with Uncle D and Auntie G and Ruby eating Mac and Cheese and doing fun kid activities in Vancouver. Lucky kids! Thank you so much Gill and D!

Then we all took some time to unwind and enjoy the Bay. Nathan loves sailing the “Byte” dinghy that we brought with us. Thank you Rhea!! He is already zooming around the bay tacking and gybing and has self righted himself after a capsize! Julia has also helped crew the Byte.

We explored Sausalito finding hip cafes, restaurants, a bookstore, kids playground and the famous houseboats Sausalito is known for. There is a vibe here that reminds us of Vancouver. We love Sausalito!

Then we set sail for Angel Island – a short hop across the Bay. Nathan and I sailed there on the Byte and met Slingshot in Ayala Cove where we used a bouy for our bow and stern to anchor for the day. We noticed that we had only 4 feet under the keel with a dropping tide so we knew we could not anchor overnight.

We dinghyed ashore to meet a friendly state park ranger who directed us toward the best trails to reach the summit- Mount Livermore. We enjoyed beautiful views on our way up to the top and fragrant Eucalyptus trees on the way down. A gorgeous spot!

We spent the night at Paradise Beach Park after two earlier tries anchoring near Ayala Cove and then Corinthian Yacht Club – the first too exposed and the second too shallow. Nathan and Gavin sailed the Byte in 20 plus knots reaching across the bay with Nathan having the ride of his life to meet us around the corner. San Francisco Bay gets windy in the afternoons! We are very happy to have our Cruising San Francisco Bay guide book (by Carolyn & Bob Mehaffy) which we used to find a beautiful spot at Paradise Beach.

Early the next morning we headed to Pier 39 for two nights where we enjoyed being in the heart of San Francisco. We just managed to tie up to the dock with the tide and current making things very challenging! I think there is a reason why this marina is not full with visitors. Gavin had to come in at full speed and I just managed to loop a mid line around the cleat before we smashed into the dock! Thankfully no smashing and we just made it in – albeit to a neighbouring slip as we determined the slip they assigned to us would have been much too challenging. Luckily the slip we chose was free and we were allowed to stay.

We enjoyed Pier 39.  There were the Sea Lions frolicking on the docks just opposite our stern, close access to the other Piers, a street car ride through the streets of Francisco with Nathan and Julia hanging on the ‘outside’. When Nathan asked “what was that smell?” after the Streetcar started to descend, the streetcar driver yelled out, “If you smell the burnin’ that means it’s workin!’” He was referring to the burning wood smell the streetcars emit from the wood brakes on the track. Then we enjoyed an hours walk through the hilly streets of San Fran back to Pier 39 and took in a Sunday China Town celebration along the way.

The next day, Gill treated the kids to a fancy chocolate tour through the fanciest chocolatiers (bean to bar) that San Fran has to offer complete with full explanation and many samples! Wow thank you Gill – the kids are sure lucky! That afternoon the 65 foot Catamaran Charter on our dock had been chatting with Gav and Nathan and invited them out for a sunset sailing tour of the Bay. Nathan even got to drive! Meanwhile, Gill Julia and I enjoyed a ladies night having a fabulous tour of the Boudin Sourdough Bakery (amazing!) and we got to see the full production of the most delicious sourdough. Then we had a fun evening sampling the sourdough and hosting our new friends from the Catamaran on board Slingshot.

Julia hanging on!

The next morning Gill, Julia and I walked to the ferry building which is about a 40 minute walk from Pier 39. Gill treated us to bluebottle coffee and treats as we explored the market. A foodie’s delight! It was filled with a collection of shops offering, artisan bread, cheese, organic vegetables, fish, meat and book stores, chocolate. Our friends from the night before had raved about the ferry building and that locals from San Francisco shopped there. It reminded us of granville island, but not as big and with a different feel.

That afternoon, we moved on to Aquatic Bay – an anchorage a few hundred meters away, still in the heart of the city. It was beautiful! Open to sailboats only and full of swimmers at all times of the day, it had a sandy beach and was still in the heart of the city.

We had a fun last minute surprise with Meera flying in for an overnight and breakfast on the boat before she and Gill departed for a 5 day retreat. I will not forget our evening picking up Meera using light signals from our flashlights at the beach. Love it! We had a beautiful morning walk and found the “crookedest street in the world” Lombardo street.

After a sad goodbye to Auntie Gill and Meera we met another kid boat for evening drinks and morning crepes while we listened to exploits of their amazing journey through the northwest passage and looked at their professional picture books with beautiful shots of icebergs and widllife.

We then did our first day of home school before heading off to Treasure Island for the evening and anchored in a protected bay complete with a sandy beach. The next morning we did school again while we waited for the tide to rise complete with PE and our ‘fitness test’ on the beach. Wow Nathan can run fast in the deep sand!

That evening we head out into San Francisco Bay into a good 25 plus knots in Berkley circle. There are so many sailboats in San Francisco. I can see why! The wind here is amazing day after day. We motor sailed with our jib out as we were still trying to finish some schooling off on the way. Then we spend a glorious afternoon and evening anchored off of Paradise Beach County Park. Nathan and I were lucky to see a family of deer foraging in the lushest green grass we’ve seen for a while! The park is well maintained and charges entry fees for cars (excludes walk-ins and boaters). The entry fees are certainly paying off as the park is beautiful.

The next morning we did school while motor sailing up the Bay and up the Napa River. The vehicle bridge kindly raised for us as we asked for ‘max lift’ to 80 feet to allow us to pass underneath. We need at least 75 feet clearance and nervously looked from below as the friendly lift operator waved us by. It is tough to tell from below how much clearance we have!

Our guidebook noted an anchorage on the river 1.65 miles north of Napa Valley Marina where we could anchor next to Eucalyptus trees. We followed the instructions and set a bow and stern anchor in 8 feet of water below the keel. A gorgeous spot! We then dinghyied into ‘downtown napa’ and tied to the main street dock and explored the cute streets and sampled a craft beer while taking in the sights of the trendy oxbow market.

We returned to the boat to enjoy grazing cows as we ate our dinner. A great day! We are off to visit a winery or two tomorrow!

We are enjoying cruising San Francisco Bay!

  5. HI, I just read your blog from Point Roberts through to your time in San Francisco. I was holding my breath for the section about the first week of your journey, A good thing I did not know too much while you were actually sailing down the coast. It is great to see the photos of you all & hear what the children are up to. I see Julia’s teeth are filling in & Nathan is becoming quite the sailor. Canadian Youth team here he comes! Looking forward to more entries.
